Reeds Maritime Meterorology

Publisher: Thomas Reed Publications, 3rd ed.; £25.00
Publication Date: 2006

One author has an Extra Master’s Certificate and the other a degree in physics and both are university lecturers. They treat meteorology as an applied science but take care to explain even such simple concepts as specific heat and relative humidity although it does become more complicated towards the end. Self-test questions are provided at the end of each chapter and it is as well to pass these before continuing. Waves, ocean currents and ice are dealt with in addition to atmospheric weather. A comprehensive glossary is provided. Their aim is clearly to teach rather than to show off their own knowledge. When things are not fully understood they say so rather than covering ignorance with long words. The book is written for professional seamen but most is essential knowledge for yachtsmen while the little that is not is of great interest. There are excellent diagrams and colour photographs of various clouds and sea states corresponding to the Beaufort Scale. This is the best book on meteorology that I have ever read. - JLC
