Now for something completely different: not a book, not an Almanac, but a nautical desk diary with a difference. It is a veritable compendium of maritime historical and nautical information, a 365 day voyage through an encyclopaedia of fact, legend, lore, collectable quotations, ‘wise saws and modern instances’. Published since 1992, each year’s diary is completely different from its predecessors and contains a fascinating miscellany reflecting the many facets of maritime life: seamanship, navigation, traditions, boatbuilding, the pains and pleasures of going to sea in ships both large and small and a host of other topics of interest to the cruising sailor. The right hand page of the diary has a maritime historical fact for each day and a short quote of the week for example, “ A sailboat cruise is a singularly impractical means of getting somewhere. (Daniel Spurr), or “ The wonder is always new that any sane man can be a sailor.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson). The left hand page contains the nautical miscellany illustrated with appropriate black and white prints and enough to keep you interested throughout the year. This is not a diary to be thrown away at the end of the year. It is a collector’s item to keep and cherish as we do our own Logbooks which reflect and record our sailing lives. Sic transit gloria maris - until the next year we put to sea! - PKC
