A most attractive and interesting read, in which the author (formerly the Information Officer of the Ramblers’ Association) details fifteen widely separated walks around the coastal footpath of Britain, this has several facets.

Firstly it is a detailed guide to the individual walks, giving practical information on  public transport, facilities, relevant guide books, the terrain and a detailed map. The routes are extremely varied in their scenery and surroundings, and are described in a way which has you reaching for walking boots.

There is much well researched information of all types. Being coastal walks there are notes on shipwrecks, lighthouses, smuggling, ancient ports and marine wildlife; but there are also snippets of relevant history, local industry, geology and archaeology, wildlife and flowers. This makes very informative for those who have no immediate plans for vigorous hiking.

Then there are the photographs. These capture the essence of the character of each of the walks described, and really are outstanding. Stephen Whitehorne has made full use of the wide variety of surroundings which Andrew McCloy has selected.
