The author, left a widow in 1927 with five young children and a 25 foot motor cruiser, cruised the coastal waters of British Columbia for fifteen successive summers. This series of stories is an enthralling account of their encounters with tides, rapids, fog, storms, bears and cougars. Nature was an intimate constituent of their upbringing. It would be interesting to know how they fared in adulthood. Their real adventures compare with those of Arthur Ransome's semi-fictional children.

More than just a biography, she recalls the ancient culture of the indigenous Indians and the hard existence of woodmen and trappers.

A more detailed map of the intricate channels and fiords behind Vancouver Island would help the reader to follow the journeys of this intrepid family. -  JFP
