Pictures on the dust cover might mislead the casual browser. In 1959, before gap years became the norm most students moved straight from university to a job. Some, such as the group who wrote this book, went on expeditions to distant shores to use their expertise or extend their knowledge. Details of the archaeological, biological and geographical studies undertaken are intermingled with descriptions of local people. There are no pictures or drawings and only one map to aid understanding.

The only boating is some trips done in a rotting 18ft fishing boat which they helped to rebuild. For anyone sailing to British Honduras / Belize this would be useful background reading. The Governor, in the foreword writes: “I would not wish necessarily to be associated personally with all the views expressed or the conclusions reached, but the book as a whole presents a real live picture of the country". It evokes the period well. - PG
