The author grew up in Sweden in the early 1940s when he learned to sail in a small pram dinghy he and his brother converted to sail, rather ineffectively. It began a fascination with rig and hull design, however, that led him to this detailed work which analyses the link between Faroese boats he first saw in the 60s to those of the Spanish and north Portuguese coasts.
Two years of field work produced a 350 page volume that charted all the boat types in living memory on the north-west coast of Spain, Galicia. Steffan was interested to link the development of these boats, particularly the dorna and the lancha de relinga to the human “action and reaction”. This work builds on the earlier experience and the subsequent development of approaches to analyse these connections. He is interested in their development as open working boats not the fishing to which they were devoted. The book is a well-produced academic work of specialised interest. It is pleasantly illustrated with both coloured and black and white photographs.
Anyone interested in traditional craft in this broad size range of 5 to 8 metres will find it fascinating even though the English text is a little fractured. – BJFS
