Reading this second edition 25 years after the first was not a chore. For anyone interested in East Coast creeks, spritsail barges and barge building this book is a must. The author’s own life in the water side village of Conyer gives this an authentic flavour. Antidotes of the characters of the village and of those on the barges are not just amusing but revealing. Conditions of those times past are well described giving an insight to the industries of this village by the Kentish Swale. The details of the trade of the barges in their hay day along with the descriptions of the brick making and brick works help record for history these now lost industries. - DH
