Publisher: Adlard Coles Nautical 2 nd ed., 2003 reprint £ 12.99

Originally published in 1987, the second edition of 2000 brings the contents of this handbook up-to-date with the latest materials used in rope making such as copolymer, Kevlar and Spectra. The publishers claim that this is the only reference book devoted entirely to splicing although there is a short chapter on ‘quick and easy knots’.  A useful addition to any sailor’s bookshelf dealing as it does very clearly with the mysteries of twelve-plait splices, rope-to-wire splices, Liverpool wire splices and double braid eye splices as well as the common or garden varieties.  The only drawback of the book is that the illustrations and photographs are all in black and white and thus somewhat less easy to follow than if colour-coding were used. - CH
