Inishtrahull, Tory Island, Bloody Foreland, Aranmore and Rathlin O'Birne - what memories! We were blessed with glorious weather when we sailed through this wonderful cruising area on an Irish circumnavigation from Salcombe. I just wish I had had this book at the time.
Wallace Clark has written the text and his cousin Ros Harvey has contributed fantastic pastel drawings which makes this into a well-presented and bound hardback "saloon table"book. Wallace, who is one of our HLRs, takes each island in turn, describes it and possible landing places and then gives a very interesting account of its history and vignettes of some of the past and present islanders. I was sorry to read the "King" of Tory had died; he told us we were safe anchored off as we were protected by Bermuda! The islands vary in size from Aranmore to Illancrone which is little more than a rock. An island should be able to support one family or one sheep.
If you are cruising this area it is a "must" but it is so absorbing that even if you are unlikely to have the good fortune to visit Donegal it will make you wish you could - such is the fascination of islands. - N C T
