I fear I would not turn to this book to teach others or myself basic rope work, it is disappointing in its inconsistencies when used as an instructional aid. Having defined working end and standing part, some of the drawings then fail to show which is which – an important consideration for the learner, especially the left-handed – while that for the clove hitch suggests that it can only be ‘thrown’ onto an open-ended vertical post.

Some of the otherwise very clear photographs show what the tied rope actually does, while others do not. Seizing is mentioned as a final security measure, but there is no description of how to do that. It is a nicely produced little volume, but falls between the stools of simple flip-card illustration and more detailed exposition on the subject. -EC
