A familiar sight to all who cruised England's East and latterly South West Coast, Des Sleightholme was the epitome of the true salty sailor. Possibly best known for his long spell as editor of Yachting Monthly, during which time his dry wit became a byword. Hating pomposity in any form, he delighted in sending up the excesses of the Establishment and bureaucracy in general.

Turning to writing he has used a lifetime's experiences in small craft to produce several books, recounting in light-hearted fashion, many of the situations in which he has found himself over the years. 'A Funny Old Sailor' is the latest, mostly autobiographical, collection of anecdotes. Once again he sends up both himself and others who've crossed his path, in his usual irrepressible, dry witted style.

An ideal bunkside companion printed in A5 format, soft cover in full colour, text in black with several photographs and many line drawings.

Sadly Des died on 11th June 2003. A unique character who will be greatly missed by all who shared his humorous zest for life. - ARB
