Oyster Rive
Publisher: George Millar Dovecote Press 2003 (new edition) £ 17.95
Half a dozen times in a life, a really good cruising book turns up. This is one of them. Mr and Mrs Millar cruise the Golfe de Morbihan in a 50 ft yawl. Their scorn for engines, echo sounders and other gadgetry is a tonic. Their appreciation of people and landscape is another. The accounts of sailing an engineless boat in the Golfe¹s brisk tides and brisker breezes are beautifully written, instructive and absorbing. Their encounter with gun-runners who plan to steal their boat, but who find that in the
redoubtable Millars they have bitten off a lot more than they can chew, is a true story that bears comparison with the Riddle of the Sands.
It is astonishing that this book has been out of print for so long, and its reappearance is a cause for much rejoicing. Every cruising home should have one. - SLl
