There is much significance in the "art" of the title.  It is of little surprise to those used to anchoring over the years to understand that.  Brian Fagan mentions  the many articles that scientific comparisons between varied styles of anchor holding in differing conditions.

Detailed explanations are given of the ways in which crew, anchors, warps, chain and all the paraphernalia should interact.  At the end of the day, his philosophy is that you need to get out there and do it.

That is not so easy these days in our crowded waters.  There are still places to go where anchoring is the norm, albeit often for a lunchtime stop rather than a safe haven for the night.  Many are inexperienced and nervous and it is worth picking out some space to put in some practise with your crew.  I would thoroughly recommend reading through this little book first.  There is much wisdom.  Though written 10 years ago there hasn't been that much change, there is no reference to the now popular octoplait warp.

The simple layout in nine chapters covers ground tackle, choosing an anchorage, anchoring under sail, in heavy weather among others, and includes sections on the Bahamian and Mediterranean techniques.

More experienced people will still find useful tips and thoughtful advice, often backed up with neat diagrams.  Such experienced sailors know, of course, that the way of the sea is such that the best laid plans…….    This authors' words may well stimulate the right response at the inevitable time of surprise and even emergency.  - MJD
