Many CA members have circumnavigated the UK and submitted logs/journals to the CA Library. Libby Purves, who has written an excellent foreword to Peter Collyer's latest book, has given her own engaging account of cruising with her family around Britain.
What is different about the journey described here is that it is land-based and involved visiting 32 coastal areas radiating from the "geographical centre of Britain", calculated by the Ordnance Survey to be Brown Syke Moss, near Clitheroe, in Lancashire.
Collyer set out to travel to, paint and srite about these 32 coastal points. The sectors cover an amazing variety of coastal areas, from favourite spots such as Whitby to others that are unlikely to receive many visitors. Each of the 32 chapters, with identifying charts, gives an account of the chgaracteristic features of a locality, together with watercolour sketches and finished paintings that possess a most attractive freshness and spontaneity.
These well-observed illustrations combine with the informative, stimulating and shrewd comments on people and places to provide an immensely enjoyable read. Henceforth, a "run ashore" may well assume new dimensions. - VMD
