The strongest impression from this book is the personality of the writer Bob Bitchin, whose larger-than-life style will either enthuse, amuse or irritate you. Describing himself as ‘very large, tattooed captain’, the story is of his adventures aboard his ketch Lost Soul.
These are variously maritime, gastronomic and amorous, and all retold with irrepressible energy and humour as he cruises with ever-changing crews from the South Pacific to the Mediterranean and back via the Panama Canal. Hugely entertaining for the first few chapters, the effect of the book was that of an exuberantly extrovert cruising companion, and after a bit a chapter at a time was more than enough. If you need convincing that blue water cruising can be a hoot, he’s out to persuade you – perhaps with the typical throw-away, “I cannot recommend decadence as a way of life, but it’s worked for me!” - RC
