A first novel, which takes its title from the latitude of Murmansk, it is written with considerable skill and knowledge of its principal setting – the River Volna on the Kola peninsula.  The plot centres around salmon fishing and the ecological problems of spent fissionable material and moves with pace holding the reader with its numerous twists and turns.

In view of the fact that the author has impressive sailing credentials – he sailed in the 1977 Whitbread Round the World Race with Clare Francis as skipper – it is somewhat disappointing that there is absolutely no material about boats, sailing or the sea.  The only reference to ships is to the rusting nuclear hulks in Andreeva Bay, close to Murmansk.  Nevertheless, a compelling bedtime read! - CH.
