"Flags are serious fun" is the heading of the opening chapter of this informative book on maritime flags and their usage. Much of the book is also fun.

We've all read the “Dear Sir,” letters in yachting magazine and know that considerable emotion can be generated by perceived ideas of falling standards of flag etiquette.  Reed's Maritime Flags sets out to become a standard book on this subject and will give guidance on such matters. It includes chapters on types of flags, rights and wrongs, short historical notes, code of signals, burgees and ensigns. The beautiful colour illustrations incorporate national maritime flags, burgees and correct flag positioning. Even if your yacht club's burgee doesn’t appear, there will be many you recognise. I found it wasn’t a cover to cover bedtime read, but more a book to dip into, enjoy and learn from, as the mood took.

It is an excellent book to have aboard to identify flags of other countries, clubs and how to dress overall, whilst the educational content will help pass away the odd wet afternoon at anchor. One criticism: the book is 26.5 x 26.5 and so is too deep for the book shelf of many yachts. However it would look inviting on a yacht club table and every club should have a copy.  - JCSH
