First of all I wondered why the Eastern seaboards of northern USA and Canada were not more fully covered in the itinerary, and then I realised the author’s boats for his experiences were on the smaller size - a Hurley 20 and a Dockerell 27. The message is to sail away in the boat you know, having read this book first to save yourself some hassle, and have more time to enjoy.

There is a good balance of personal anecdote and general theory, and I found the opinions did not grate. The composition of the photos is not as good as could be, and given the author’s attention to detail, I am sure his next book could be better served by more thought with the camera on the cruise. So, a good read, good value, and full of tips like remember the tide tables for the return home!- JT
