Publisher: Thomas Reed Publications, Rev., 2nd Ed. 2001 £ 14.95

A new one to me, so I have no comment about whether 2nd second Ed is better. The title is deceptive, as others have said. Much is about the boats that the author and her partner have owned, their design, the practicalities of layout, sail plans, and modifications, long distance cruising and saving money. The author tends to save not by sourcing cheaply, but by abstinence, not for her the electronic gadgetry or gas, or generators, solar panels, or inboard engines. No, these sailors use sextant, paraffin and have a preference for outboards. The reasoning is fine, if you like “hair shirts”!

I liked the black and white illustrations, cartoons, yacht plans and photographs. They don’t give the impression of just filling space, but are there to serve a purpose. Most of all I liked the section on keeping food and preventing mould, the bane of every sailors life. I didn’t like the format, the same as that of pilot books, paperback of A4 dimensions. - DWG
