A recent delivery trip, Clynder to Kyle of Lochalsh, was opportune for a review of this updated volume in Martin Lawrence's series of Scottish west coast pilots.
The introduction is sound, and the pilotage information accessible. Chartlets are somewhat short on land detail, which is presented mainly photographically, often as aerial views. I wonder if glossy paper is appropriate on deck on a damper day, although the vicarious views may be some compensation. The binding has survived normal handling well.
Condifered in the context of alternatives, there is no overwhelming difference from the equivalent Clyde Cruising Club Sailing Directions. Choice would be personal, but note the boundaries of the volumes in the two series are very different. We all have our favourite anchorages, but I would have been a bit more positive about Loch Etive! In settled weather, in an Achilles 24, we had a tremendous couple of days exploring the places of Deidreof the Sorrows, and an ascent of Ben Starav. -JT
