The sub-title of this book is “ A no-nonsense introduction for all ages” and that is exactly what it is. It takes the novice navigator through all the basics of chart work, pilotage tides and passage planning. The pages are uncluttered and diagrams and photos are used to good effect. The first few chapters were tested on various members of my family, all found the information clearly laid out and accessible. It is a slim volume at 72 pages and this is its virtue. However, there is a resulting tension about what is left out. There is no mention of tidal curves, SOLAS and the electronic navigation chapter is limited to 3 pages. The book claims to be an introduction and it does this well. It is not and does not claim to be a comprehensive guide to navigation. The reader will not be disappointed if they take note of the author’s quote on the cover that “Anyone who goes afloat should know something about navigation- if only to get the boat back to harbour safely if the skipper is put out of action. This book will help you do just that.” - JP
