“Who really needs another knot book?” I wondered as this came for review. And yet Knots & Splices quickly draws you in to find out more about the seven different bowlines covered and the other 100 or so splices, bends, whippings, hitches, seizings and knots shown. Its pedigree is confirmed by its one revision and 19 reprints since first published in 1953. Illustrations are clear, uncluttered and not overdone, all with colour photos – easy to follow – and with explanations of strengths weaknesses and uses.
Much larger books on this subject have been called “pocket” by the publisher. This genuinely, at less than 16cm x 11cm and only 5mm thick really will even go into a shirt pocket. So, if you like something to while away those long watches, there is ample room in an oily pocket for this and a foot or two of string to practice some of the rarer varieties and options to your favourite ways. This all comes at an excellent price. – MD
