If you were tempted to undertake such a project (and I would not) then you would want this book at your elbow. Indeed you would be advised to read it as soon as you contemplated the project.  It is a clear and accessible manual which describes the replacement of the engine on the author’s own boat. The author is self-effacing about his technical skill but soon you realise that he is much more able than he is letting on.

The book is full of sound advice as well as technical “how to” detail. His approach is epitomised by wisely suggesting that finding the perfect engine by endlessly pouring over the data is less worthwhile than going with a local rep. who is willing to give you support .

The chapters progress in logical order, sourcing the engine, removal of the old engine, preparing the vacated space, installing the new engine, even through to sea trials. Every chapter is clearly illustrated by photographs and diagrams. If followed step by step, what could possibly go wrong? That is the latent danger in the book, that it makes it all look so easy.

Nevertheless given that most people would realise that this is a complex task needing a good deal of courage and resilience this book should guide them past most of the pit falls. The financial saving, though useful, is perhaps second to the satisfaction of undertaking a complex project well.

Lastly – the photo on the front cover: were they really smiling as they lowered that engine and was the sky really that blue?
