Volume two – Voyages of the Discovery – (the definite article is, of course, deliberate), covers another long-distance cruise: 31,000 nm between September 2008 and July 2010 in which Pochin, accompanied, as previously, by a considerable number of rotating crew, crossed the Atlantic, sailed round South America via Cape Horn (56 degrees South) and continued northwards to Alaska (59 degrees North). His return to Portugal was via the Panama Canal, the West Indies, Bermuda and the Azores. For a man with a replacement hip who reached 70 just before the end of the second voyage, these two books reveal considerable courage and determination.
Well-presented by the author/publisher with scores of small photographs suitably text-wrapped and with useful outline maps of the routes, both books are a good read. Second editions would profit from some sub-editing and the reader would be assisted if the names of the numerous boats which are mentioned were shown in italic print.
