When the second edition was reviewed some six years ago, it was noted for its superb quality of presentation and print.  Perhaps more importantly deference was paid to the experience that had gone into the background of the extensive understanding of the issues from these two Swedish authors.The principles do not, of course, change radically over time and the bulk of this work remains as essential to the modern boat builder as ever.  After two main chapters which deal with design methodology and “preliminary considerations”, an amazing amount of detail on specific aspects follows.  There are over eighty pages devoted to Hull, Keel and Rudder design alone. Sail and Rigging is comprehensively covered as well as a detailed treatise on GRP being supplemented by Fibre Reinforced Plastic.  We are given n assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of differing polyester composite sandwich construction with load and fatigue factors  Diagrams on layout and accommodation as well as sail control leads and winch positioning are well illustrated.In addition to all that, the new edition carries new hydrodynamic formulae based on the more recent research and covers the new standard regarding seaworthiness of craft between 6-25m. The extensive material on scantlings has been developed further.  – BSS
