‘Just Sea and Sky’ opens in 1953 with Ben Pester seeking to undertake what has become an established achievement for long-distance cruising yachtsmen. From the opening paragraphs it immediately becomes apparent this was achieved with only the most basic resources to hand. Purchasing 'Tern II’, a Victorian gaff yawl once owned by the pioneering yachtsman Claud Worth, he steps into the footsteps of a prolific yachtsman.
Complete with a range of historical background, quotes and illustrations the book encompasses a range of the experiences that Ben and his crew encountered. Presented in a factual and straightforward style, the narrative provides an informative 'snapshot' of the yachting fraternity at that time, for example, delivering mail to the Galapagos Islands, paying less than $5 for passage through the Panama Canal, navigating with a Walker trailing log and not sighting another British registered yacht until halfway through the voyage to name but a few!
Without being overbearing, the continual reminder of having absolutely none of the modern accoutrements a cruising sailor takes for granted, the author provides a humbling perspective for the modern sailor. To quote one startling instance, in the closing chapters of the voyages Pester writes, “Navigationally the final days were to be difficult.... In other words, I did not know where we were.” Even on a relatively short coastal passage, imagine having no confirmed idea of your vessel's position for a full hour and then multiply that sense of confusion by a period of days whilst in the Southern Pacific with limited supplies!
The parting shot is that 'Tern II' and Pester seem not to be finished with each other. It is envisaged that 'Tern II', currently undergoing restoration in Auckland, will return to the UK with Pester sailing aboard for part of the voyage.
