Turkish Waters & Cyprus Pilot
Publisher: Imray, Laurie, Norie & Wilson
Publication Date: 2006 7th ed.
Little introduction is needed to Rod Heikell's Turkish Waters and Cyprus Pilot which, in its many editions, has been the cruiser's bible for this coast for over two decades.
Pilotage information is clear and comprehensive, with detailed descriptions, full colour plans and many excellent photographs of a plethora of harbours and anchorages. Details have been extensively revised following Heikell's return to Turkey from the West Indies in 2005.
However this book is much more than a pilot. For the sailing needs, there are detailed descriptions of formalities, laws, chartering and communications including email and the internet. Weather patterns are discussed together with the various sources of weather information, both ancient and modern. For the tourist needs, there are sections on the history, marine life and food of Turkey. Within the harbour details there are many colour photographs of the sights and Heikell's personal - and sometimes idiosynchratic - descriptions of the attractions.
Comparison with my edition of 20 years ago is interesting. Marmaris - then an anchorage - now has three marinas. Water and electricity are generally available as opposed to the 'pump in the village'. But sadly dolphins, then common, are no longer so.
Essential reading both before and during any cruise to Turkey and Cyprus. AMB
