Printed in landscape format this attractively illustrated guide is an ideal introduction to the complicated world of sails and rigging. After an interesting foreword on the history of rigs and their employment, the author, a sailing journalist who specializes in the traditional boat world and teaches traditional sail techniques, starts the book with the definition and history of the full-rigged ship. Then in the following eleven chapters she covers all the other rigs, such as the brigantine, the ketch, and the yawl, with the penultimate chapter, on the lugger, covering the many variations on this type of rig, such as the Fifie, the Sgoth, the lateen and the junk rig. Each chapter is profusely illustrated with colour and black-and-white photographs and excellent coloured line drawings by Veres Lảszlỏ. There is a comprehensive bibliography and index.
