Paul Stevens' book, subtitled a ‘hands on insider's guide to surveying second hand boats’  is clear, concise, methodical and comprehensive, much like a useful survey report which is the template upon which the book is based. Proceeding logically through an FRP vessel the author identifies what to look at, typical defects one might encounter and how they might manifest themselves all helpfully accompanied by many photographs. He stresses the importance of differentiating fact and opinion but also shows how tests can be used to bring opinion closer to fact. Rectification is not ignored and there is guidance on what this involves and thus the potential seriousness of the defect. Not just aimed at  surveyors, or those aspiring to be such, the book seeks to appeal to boat owners either actual or prospective. The author is successful in this latter aim and there is no indication of any watering down or over-simplification in achieving this. The consequence however, is that a good prior knowledge of FRP boats, their construction and equipment is assumed by the author. Thus it would not be suitable for someone very new to boats or not really wishing to get involved in this level of detail. For others who do not feel entirely comfortable unless they are familiar with every nook and cranny of their boat, this book is an excellent tool.  I can thoroughly recommend it. Andrew Bonnett
