Price: £17.95Rod Heikell (and Lu) are very much members of the CA family (and Rod has indeed been a Vice President). For more than twenty-five years (since his Greek Waters Pilot was first published) Mediterranean sailors have come to think of him as a ‘virtual’ crew companion – now with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the area from France to Turkey. His Pilot Books are so comprehensive and apparently infallible that there is a perverse pleasure in spotting the very rare mistake. However, since he generously acknowledges the help of our Members’ reports, we may well have only ourselves to blame. The West Aegean pilot is one of three publications covering smaller areas than the fully-fledged Pilots – the others are the Ionian and the East Aegean. The area covered by this second edition has been enlarged by adding the eastern Attic coast, from Sounion up to Volos and the Northern Sporades to the rest of the Attic coast, the Western Cyclades and the Eastern Peloponnese – a conveniently ‘packaged’ cruising area. The information is broadly the same as that in the Greek Waters Pilot, and presented in that familiar and admirable form. As a paperback it is handier (and much cheaper) than the full Greek Waters Pilot, but I have not found that its sister book has weathered the rigours of life on board (and on deck) quite as durably.
