A highly decorated military leader, Bill Tilman's climbing and sailing achievements rank amongst the greatest in the fields of twentieth century mountaineering and deep sea cruising and his books remain essential reading for many who embark on similar ventures. They cover a series of high latitude voyages in traditional Bristol Channel pilot cutters.

"No Pay, No Prospects, not much Pleasure". This was how Bill Tilman advertised in The Times for crew on his voyages. Bob Comley was one of the few who were recruited by this method, and returned for a second voyage. He has taken a special interest in the life and exploits of this famous yachtsman, explorer and mountaineer.
