Notes

Knight Cup

Awarded annually on the recommendation of the Council. Nominations are not required, but any Member may make a nomination in writing to the Chairman of Council.

 

The Fid

This award is intended to stimulate interesting articles, well illustrated if appropriate, on cruising matters published in the CA 'Cruising' or the Bulletin.  Entries will be judged on their content in terms of useful current information, entertainment value, illustration and presentation.

The successful entry should not (if possible) exceed 3,000 words in length and can be anything from a good cruising yarn to a technical article. For a guide on presentation see 'general guidelines' below.

An article as an entry for this award should be sent to the Editor of 'Cruising', c/o the General Secretary. All articles submitted to the Editor of 'Cruising' may be considered for this award. This award will tie made on the recommendation of the Editor of 'Cruising'.

 

Brittain Cup

No formal entry is required and the award will be made on the recommendation of the Information Executive Committee, after considering all information sent in. In making their recommendation they will take into account the amount of new information obtained at first hand.

 

Hanson Cup, Love Cup and Dugon Cup

These three cups will be awarded for the logs of cruises completed in the current year and submitted formally as entries for these awards.  In this context the word log means a report of the cruise presented in such a way as to be interesting and readable as well as providing a useful and accurate record to others planning or engaged in a similar cruise. The log entry should be typewritten and should be accompanied by relevant illustrations, plans, route sketches etc. The title page should give details of the route, duration, vessel and crew. Wherever possible, Cruising Report Sheets (see Publications) should be completed for new information.   Emphasis will be placed by the judge on the cruising achievement, considering route, weather, etc, readability and presentation, navigation, pilotage and other cruising information and seamanship under all conditions. The best log entries may be published in 'Cruising' and may be submitted, with Members approval, for publication to the national yachting press.

 

Dingle Cup

Awarded to the child of a CA Member, who has not attained his/ her 16th birthday an the 31 December of the year in question, who submits the best log of a cruise or the best story on the subject of cruising. A story need not be more than 500 words and need not necessarily be a personal experience. The best entries will be displayed on the notice board of the CA library. The winner of the Dingle Cup will be made an Honorary Cadet Member of the Cruising Association until attaining the age of 21 years.

 

Yachting World Family Cruising Trophy

This trophy is awarded to the family who has either undertaken the most meritorious family cruise, written the best log or has done the most for family cruising in the year concerned. When (he entry is in the form of a log, the general guidance given below will apply. When a CA Member wishes to highlight a case of meritorious family cruising without submitting a log, a full statement of the achievements of the particular family should be typed and sent to the chairman of the Members Services Executive Committee by 31 December in the year concerned. The statement may be submitted by the family concerned or by another CA Member.

The term 'family' at the judge's discretion will normally be defined as one adult, or one man and one woman, with any number of children (up to the age of 16 years at the time of the cruise).

 

Dolphin Cup

Awarded for the best photographic log submitted by a Member. The log should consist of between 12 and 20 prints of a size not exceeding 7.5" x 5 (or metric equivalent) either in colour or monochrome; transparencies are not acceptable. The photographs shall be taken wholly by the entrant/ crew of the cruising vessel and in the year in question. There must be an accompanying text of up to 150 words per picture, and consideration will be given to the value of the log to other intending navigators in the area.

 

The Lacey Trophy

Awarded for the best illustrated log submitted in HTML over the Internet or by CD-ROM, the winning and other suitable entries to be available on or through the CA Web site.

 

The Practical Boat Owner Prize

Awarded by PBO magazine for the best photographic log of a cruise for the duration of one week. The week can be taken from any part of a longer cruise.

General Guidelines for Submission of Logs

 

Presentation

Entries for Fid, Hanson, Love and Dugon Cups and the Yachting World Family Cruising Trophy should be typewritten on plain A4 paper, double line spaced, with wide margins and on one side of the paper only. Photographs, plans and sketch maps should be included where relevant and available. An entry sheet should be obtained from the Secretariat and returned completed with each entry. If possible a duplicate copy of the entry should be supplied but if this is not feasible the CA will make a copy. (The top copy of the submission will be returned to the author, the second copy will be retained in the CA's log collection). Entries for the Dingle Cup can be submitted in any form, as long as it is legible. The name and address of the child and parent Member must be supplied together with the child's date of birth.

 

Closing Date

The closing date for nominations for the Knight Cup and for entries to all other trophies shall be 31 December.

 

Property and Copyright

All entries remain the property of the author but the CA cannot accept responsibility for loss or damage to material supplied. Ail reasonable care will be taken to protect such material and return it to the author in due course.  Copyright also remains the property of the author but unless otherwise stated in writing by the author at the time of submission, it will be understood that the CA has appropriate rights to publish such material and to offer it to any other publisher for reproduction. Any fees or royalties thereby earned will be passed on to the author.

 

Storage and Retrieval

As far as possible the CA will keep a Member's copy in the Hanson Room.

 

Announcement and Presentation of Awards

The judge or judges will present their report and the awards at CA House on a date to be arranged. The results will be published in the Summer issue of 'Cruising'.

 

Changes to Challenge Trophies Criteria

The Council shall have the power to make any alteration to the Challenge Trophies criteria, but any such alteration shall not become effective until published in the first 'Cruising' of any year.

 

Care and Custody of Trophies

All trophies are perpetual challenge trophies and shall remain at all times the property of the Cruising Association. They will be retained on permanent display at the CA House.

 

Permanent Momento

Each winner shall receive a memento, which shall remain the property of the winner.
