Chart Room

Library > Chart Room

An integral part of the Library & Information Centre or Hanson Room, the Chart Room houses over 2900 charts; 2400 from the link Standard Navigational Chart Listing on the British Admiralty Hydrographic Office website and 500 from other countries, as well as chart books and atlases.

Chart Collection

The original chart collection was provided by a decommissioned tanker, and charts have been obtained from various sources since, many given by our members.  These are divided into 29 folios covering different geographical areas.  Index books define the folios areas, and lists charts by originating country and chart number, and within folios.  This makes finding the required chart straightforward.

Charts covering the home waters, Caribbean and Eastern Mediterranean are dated January 1996, except some of around 15 to 20 years old.  However, new editions to the key charts among these exceptions have been obtained in 2004.  Donations or loan of charts are always most welcome, and acknowledged in Cruising.  Please contact the for further details.

Charts are not corrected and intended only for passage planning and for determining which charts are needed for a passage.  Parallel rulers and dividers are available.  By agreement with the Hydrographic Office, charts are not available for loan and may NOT be photocopied in part or whole.

Electronic charts, together with a dedicated PC, were introduced in 2004.

A collection of obsolete Admiralty charts, many with attractive panoramas, and some covering areas at a larger scale than currently available, are available for supervised inspection by prior arrangement with .
