CA Burgee  HANNs Precis 05/03

HANNs Precis

This set of Harbour Anchorage and Navigation Notes (HANNs) is longer than usual as HANNs is now be produced only 3 times a year rather than 4 as previously due to the CA magazine which will now go to our members 6 times a year rather than 4. HANNs therefore will go out with alternate postings.

As usual HANNs reminds members of any Admiralty notices to mariners (NMs) which affect an entry in the Cruising Almanac 2005/06. This covers many changes in lights, movement of buoys and in a few cases local NMs such as Poole where significant dredging is taking place to widen and deepen channels. It also gives a brief reference to reports from our members who send in comments on harbours and anchorages they have visited which are of great value to members cruising that area in future.

Corrections to the Cruising Almanac are now on the internet www.cruising.org.uk/almanac Issue 1.2 15/3/05 and cumulative amendments to corrections 05 dated 24/6/05. A new set is being prepared now and will be available on the internet next March.

The main Light at the Longships Lt Ho is now at last working after lengthy work.

In the entrance to Poole all craft under 50m loa are now obliged to give way to the Chain Ferry.

Depths in the entrance to Sovereign Harbour at Eastbourne are now reduced to 1m. Contact marina office for information on depths.

One of our members found Grimsby to be a good passage port. Visitors go into the Fish Dock at HW ±2h and the marina is in the SW corner.

The Caledonian Canal is closed for engineering works in the Inverness and Fort William areas. Completion anticipated 27 march 2006.

Some of our members have found very rough water off St Anne's Head on the ebb with a westerly wind. The advice in our Cruising Almanac is to avoid going close in to the headland, there being plenty of room between the headland and the main shipping lane which in any case can be used if no vessel coming in or out.

One of our members gave us some very detailed notes on harbour on the W and S coasts of Ireland. Others visited ports on the E and NE coasts. These would be very valuable to anybody cruising Ireland especially for the first time.

Morlais is silting up in the entrance with only 1.5m on an average tide. A member found excellent service for a broken boom at L'Aber-Wrach.

As usual many of our members cruise in the Mediterranean and so we have reports relating to Heikell pilots and bringing them up to date. This time there were many about the Italian mainland coast as well as the islands Sardinia and Sicily.

Further afield there are reports from Cuba, Indonesia and Australia.
