Hanns 03/4 is the 4th in the series Harbour, Anchorage and Navigation
Notes for 2003 which members of the Cruising Association have received
this year. Below are listed some typical notes which members have sent in
and are stored in the regional files in the library at our headquarters in
CA House.
Admiralty Notices to Mariners resulting in amendments to the Cruising
Almanac 2003/2004 published by the Cruising Association and Imrays are
noted in HANNs.
One significant entry in the Notices to Mariners this quarter have been
the number of sites where wind farms are being erected at sea.
They will consist of 60 or more generators spaced 200m apart. The blades
will be over 100m in diameter and the turbines some 70m high. One new one
coming on stream is on the Arklow Bank off the East coast of
Ireland.
Our members are now beginning to note where internet facilities are available on their cruises. One member cruising from SW England to the
S and E coasts of Ireland noted 7 cafes, pubs, and libraries which
provided that facility.
One member gave us detailed directions with sketches for getting in and
out of the difficult harbour at Southwold on the Suffolk coast.
With 4kn tides on the flood and up to 6kn on the ebb this sort of
information is invaluable.
One member left his boat to winter in Denmark. Over wintering in
foreign countries is becoming increasingly common both in the Baltic and
the Mediterranean and we now have considerable files on the efficiency and
cost of leaving one's boat abroad.
There appears with the very dry summer to be only one through route
available for transit through the canals from the English channel
to the Med. No doubt this will change after winter rains but it is as well
to know the current situation before setting out.
Many members went to both the N and Atlantic coast of Spain. New
marinas are springing up and older ones are being enlarged. Reports
received for many places.
One member circumnavigated Sardinia and sent in reports on 23
ports there. These were very full and invaluable to anyone visiting there.
Also reports received for ports in Italy on the NW coast , Sicily and the Adriatic coast of Italy.
Our members continue to visit Croatia where there are many
suitable harbours and marinas for visitors in a beautiful country.
Finally one couple sent in information on 17 ports in Turkey and N Cyprus. It seems that there is an easier attitude between N and
S Cyprus now although passage for boats from one to the other has yet to
be worked out.
