HANNs 02/4 is the last in the series of Harbour, Anchorage and Navigation Notes
for 2002. As usual it gives a short synopsis of contributions which we have received from
our members cruising in different parts of the world. Below are listed a few highlights
from their reports.The full version of HANNs is available only to members of the Cruising
Association.
We list Admiralty Notices to Mariners (NM) which affect the sailing directions and plans
in the new Cruising Almanac 2003/2004 published by Imray, Laurie, Norie and Wilson and the
Cruising Association. This new Almanac is available now price £28 and includes tide
tables for 40 standard ports for 2003 plus a postcard giving the buyer a free copy of the
tide tables for 2004. Whilst the pilotage follows that in the 8th edition of the Cruising
Association Handbook the Almanac has been extensively revised updated and includes
additional plans of harbours and difficult passages.
A preliminary notice to mariners gives a list of nearly 30 changes to buoyage being
planned for the River Orwell.
We received a report from one of our members visiting the Faeroe Islands in
which he is able to tell us that they are no longer dry and bars are open to 0300 Fri/Sat.
A lot of notes have been received on French Inland Waterways both from our Hon
Local Representative in Bordeaux and from a member going from the Channel to the
Mediterranean.
One of our members spent the whole summer cruising down the West coast of France and has given us valuable information especially on the region between La Rochelle and the
Gironde and the area around Rochefort.
Both Greenland and Spitzbergen were visited by members who have sent back
important notes on these far North areas. 6 anchorages/harbours visited on the west coast
of Greenland. A sketch as to where to anchor at Longyearbyen in the Spitzbergen
archipelago.
Lots of information on the Baltic including the East coast of Sweden, Latvia and
Estonia and the easing of a restriction in Russia.
Both the Mediterranean coasts of Spain and France received much attention with
reports on no less than 60 ports on the French coast.
The Mediterranean Islands received visits from various members who have written up
extensive reports on the Ballearic Islands, Corsica, and Sardinia. The last two were particularly well covered with almost all viable anchorages and harbours
covered.
There is a summary of reports from many members who over the last few years have been
visiting places on the West and South coasts of Italy
This quarter we have an exceptional amount of material on the Pacific. More
reports on the Philippines and an exceptional report on the Louisiade Is Papua
New Guinea for which there is no published guide. Extensive reports also for the Vanuatu
Islands.
Finally substantial reports received on the Queensland coast of Australia one
running to 40 pages. Also covered are New South Wales and Tasmania where 14
harbours are written up.
