HANNs 02/3 is the third of 4 in the series of Harbour, Anchorage
and Navigation Notes for 2002. As usual it gives a short synopsis of
contributions which we have received from our members cruising in
different parts of the world. Below are listed a few highlights from their
reports.
We also list Admiralty Notices to Mariners (NM) which affect the sailing
directions and plans in the Cruising Association Handbook 8th ed.
In past editions of HANNs the entries have been related to the page
number in the Handbook where relevant. The 8th edition is now virtually
sold out and is being replaced by the Cruising Almanac which is based on
the pilotage notes in the Handbook up dated to this year. In this edition
of HANNs the relevant page numbers of both publications is given. The new
Cruising Almanac will be available by Sept 13 at the Southampton Boat Show
and thereafter from the Cruising Association or Imray, Laurie, Norie and
Wilson.
Piracy and Armed Robbery NM for week 26/ 02 gives a warning of
piracy and armed robbery off the Somali coast and advises vessel to stay
at least 50M and if possible 100M off that coast Advice includes keeping
radio and vhf communication to a minimum.
Several changes to the buoyage in Poole Approaches and also in
the Thames estuary where the buoyage in the Edinburgh Channel is
removed in favour of Foulgers Gat.
We have reports that the Deben Bar is less than the recent
local chart is showing. Changes here are very frequent.
Many useful reports on changes around the both the East and West coast of Scotland and the Orkney Islands by our regional editor
cruising there.
The bar at the entrance to Wexford harbour is silting up and the
RNLI have advised against entry here. Also in Ireland our Hon local
representative has reported a new marina at Glenarm on the North
coast about 10M N of Larne Lough.
Many reports from the Baltic. These include harbours in Latvia, Estonia and Finland. Also useful information and help from our
Hon local representative in St Petersburg about getting a visa to Russia. We also have massive reports from a member cruising in S Norway
and Sweden.
In the Mediterranean there are reports about 5 harbours in Sardinia. Also much information on places in the Adriatic and Greece.
Further afield two of our world cruising members have visited the Maldives and a port Cochin in India in which they send very helpful
information on the customs/visa requirements. there.
