HANNs 02/2 is the second in the series of Harbour, Anchorage and Navigation Notes this year. It gives a short synopsis of contributions which we have received from our members cruising in different parts of the world. Below are listed a few highlights from their reports.
We also list the Admiralty Notices to Mariners which affect the sailing directions and plans in the Cruising Association Handbook 8th edition.
The Inshore Waters Forecast is now being broadcast for 24h with a further 24h outlook. The further outlook for all areas at the end of the forecast is for 3 days beyond the initial 48h
We hear that owing to silting there are major changes afoot in the buoyage in the Edinburgh channel as well as other Gats in the entrance to the Thames
The Royal Findhorn YC have a good internet site giving the up to date buoyage at the entrance to Findhorn.
The CA Handbook is not perfect and an error has just been found in the passage through Calf Sound near St Marys in the IOM. Described as 5ca wide it should of course be 0.5ca width
The Bude Canal sea lock has been restored and is now operational with access at HW.
Reports received of problems off TunØ in Aarhus Bay where yachts have been striking the reef to the E of the island. Directions for avoidance given. Much detailed information on other hbrs in the area.
A lot of reports from our members cruising in Sicily where practically every navigable hbr was visited.
S Italy and the Adriatic Coast have been visited by members who have sent in useful reports. There are also reports on 32 ports in Croatia. These are invaluable to anyone cruising in these areas.
Voluminous reports on over 50 ports and anchorages in Greece. The Mediterranean Group in the Cruising Association now has immense knowledge of this part of the world and their Laying up Directory is invaluable to our members who keep their boats out there.
Further afield there have been visits to the Canary Islands and the Cape Verde Islands. The reports from there are particularly useful for those making the passage across the Atlantic.
Reports also from the Caribbean covering aspects on Barbados, and the Grenadines
Where the above information refers to places covered in the CA Handbook 8th Ed a reference is given to that book. However that is now nearly sold out and a Cruising Almanac is taking its place due out at the Southampton Boat Show. This almanac will contain 2 years tide tables as well as pilotage and plans for many harbours from the Faeroe Islands to Gibraltar and the West coast of Ireland to the Approaches to the Baltic. Future references will be to the new book when it is published.
