CA Burgee  HANNs 01/1 Precis

HANNs Precis

HANNs 01/1 is the first of 4 Harbour Anchorage and Navigation Notes to go out to members in 2001. Members send in notes which they think may be of interest to other members and these go into the regional files for their benefit. They are of particular use to those expecting to visit a new cruising area for the first time. These notes are world wide. For the Cruising Association Handbook area they are referenced to that pilot book thus keeping it up to date every quarter.

HANNs 01/1 starts with a note about the new Coast Guard Weather Forecasts arising from a new agreement made between the CG and the Met Office UK is divided into 15 coastal areas for this purpose.

One of our members has sent in some fairly detailed instructions from the QHM at Portsmouth which are of great importance for small craft and yachts..

Of great interest to all yachtsmen who want to get from one side of Scotland to the other will be the opening of the Forth - Clyde Canal this May. This follow the Roman Antonine wall from Grangemouth on the Forth to Bowling on the Clyde. Only 3m air height so mast has to come down. but 1.83m draft and up to 20m length and 6m beam. We have full detail of this new canal with prices and details of the locks and unusual drop lock.

As usual French Inland Waterways are ever popular including some places for laying up your boat over winter.

Puerto de Guetaria is now closed to yachts so one of our members has visited Puerto de Zumaya which is a couple of miles to the west. Not only does he give a detailed report but has provided an excellent sketch which is attached to the full HANNs 01/1

Northern Europe has been visited by many of our members in recent years. The Baltic rally to St Petersburg last summer produced a lot of information from our members. In this HANNs we have a report from a member visiting Northern Norway giving us invaluable information on 17 anchorages and harbours between Aalsund and Tromsoe.

Another member visited East Sweden and send reports on 8 ports there.

The Spanish Mediterranean coast was visited by a member who wrote up what he thought yachtsmen wanted to know and did not always get in the pilots. He concentrated on those items which make life easy visiting a new marina such as the availability of washing machines, the ease of shopping and can you get ice. He covered 30 ports between Gibraltar and Barcelona

Every year we get reports of good and bad in Croatia, mostly good. One of our members spent 6 months cruising there.

Greece always produces masses of information and this HANNs is no exception. Reports on over 30 places.

Atlantic Islands The Azores, Madeira islands and Cape Verde Islands were all visited. One of the most interesting being Port of Porto Santo about 50 miles NNE of Madeira where there is a small man made harbour with pontoons and power and water.

The Far East has been a popular place and we have pilotage notes of ports in Malaysia and Singapore. Also the Philippines where we now have a very large amount of information. Papua New Guinea was visited and reports on 11 harbours and anchorages there.

The Annual Log Competition. The Cruising Association has an annual competition where members present their logs. 17 this year covering all parts of Europe from North Norway and Russia to the Eastern Mediterranean. These are available to members as are all previous years.
