HANNs 00/2 is the second instalment of Harbour, Anchorage and Navigation
Notes which members of the Cruising Association have received this year.
Below are listed some high lights from members reports which give much
unique information to those sailing both in Europe or indeed anywhere in
the world.
Axmouth harbour on the Dorset coast is a shallow and difficult
harbour to enter with strong streams on the ebb. This HANNs includes a
plan of the harbour entrance prepared by the Axe YC which is a must for
anyone wishing to enter this port.
There has been much renumbering of buoys at Cowes and the river Medina.
On the river Hamble HM requires proof of Third Party insurance
which applies even to those using visitors moorings. Details of amount in
HANNs.
Much repositioning of buoyage at Harwich after dredging.
One of our members Charles Reed has done some exploratory work on an
anchorage on Bardsey Island in Cardigan Bay. The chart he produced
showing this anchorage is attached to this HANNs. A worthwhile venture for
anyone sailing in this area with great bird life and much romantic Celtic
connections.
As usual there is a lot of information on the French Inland Waterways particularly on the Garonne, and canals Lateral, Midi and Robine. Also some helpful advice from our local Hon
representative on the dangers of leaving the Gironde on the ebb with wind
against tide.
Frank Singleton produced excellent reports on ports on the Basque coast in N Spain including information on a new marina at Zumaia.
Quite a few of our members seem to be venturing to Spitzbergen and the Svalbard archipelago and we now have much information on
cruising up there including an Infopak available to members.
There are a string of reports from members cruising in various parts of
the Mediterranean. Capt and Mrs Kempton give us some valuable
information on Tunisia. David and Pat Neal on the Costas del
Dorado and Brava in Spain and also the Ballearic Islands.
Our local representative in Croatia gives timely advice on mobile
phone costs there and weather as well as notes on some 36 anchorages.
Greek Waters have already been visited by our members this season
and we expect many more reports from here during the summer.
There are some reports of special interest to those visiting Northern
Australia and Darwin. John Whyte again contributes to our knowledge of
New Zealand waters.
Finally we now have probably the best information available anywhere of
sailing in the Philippines thank to excellent work by Phil and
Ines Langham.
