HANNs 00/1 for the CA Internet site for Non Members
HANNs 00/1 is the first instalment of the year and indeed the century of
Harbour Anchorage and Navigation Notes. Cruising Association members
receive the full notes 4 times a year which are a summary of reports sent
in by our members and filed in the library. Our members cruise all over
the globe so as you see below the reports cover the Pacific, Spitzbergen
and other far flung places as well as home waters.
A most important development regarding a change of chart datum is
summarised which will affect everyone sailing for many years to come.
In Scotland a millennium link between the North Sea and the west
coast of SScotland is due to come on stream next year.
One of our members found some interesting anchorages on the west side of Mull and Islay not often frequented by yachts.
We have many members circumnavigating Ireland but not often
visiting 50 harbours and anchorages against each of which a star rating is
given from 1 to 5
For those wishing to cut through from the Bay of Biscay through the Canals
Lateral a La Garonne and du Midi to the Mediterranean there is advice
where to take your mast down.
Some excellent information for those more adventurous wishing to sail to Spitzbergen particularly on the preplanning of such a voyage.
One of our members visited a lot of harbours on the French
Mediterranean coast in December when things are somewhat quieter than
in July/August.
Two members report on many anchorages and marinas on both the Italian
coast of the Adriatic and also on Croatia. Altogether over
20 ports covered with much detail.
As usual many of our members visited Greek waters visiting about
30 ports for which they have sent in reports. Invaluable information on
winter laying up is provided here.
The same applies to Turkey and a most interesting report from
Jane Curtis who went to the Black Sea visiting the coasts and
harbours of Bulgaria , Rumania, the Ukraine, Russia and Georgia. Useful
information here on visas; surprising the countries for which no visa is
required.
Our members Phil and Ines Langham spent some time cruising in the Philippines and visited anchorages on the west coast of those islands.
Finally each year members send in accounts of their logs which go
into the library and are available for members to read. They are a great
incentive for others to follow to places they may have thought beyond
their capacity to reach. There are logs with families and children and
some with crew age well into the 70s. Much information can be gleaned from
these logs which are not just about the sea passage but where to shop and
eat out in foreign ports.
