This course aims to give the mariner additional knowledge and skills to enhance Safety of Life at Sea by maintaining their charts to the highest possible standard. Proper chart correcting requires it to be done in an organised and orderly fashion. The objective of this course will be to explain and demonstrate this and give good explanations as to why it should be done in a particular way. Course includes practical training.
Course includes tea and coffee. £65.00 members, £70.00 non-members. (Limited to 15 delegates)

Yacht designer - both keelboats and multihulls, boatbuilder, surveyor, yachting journalist, illustrator, editor (for 7 years the Associate Editor of Practical Boat Owner - Britain's biggest selling boating magazine) and the author of a number of books, Andrew plans to spend the morning on electrical basics - 'The things every skipper should know' - with the afternoon session being devoted to 'Electrical self-sufficiency and why it's important' - meaning how to do without shore-power wherever possible. By way of background, he has been cruising Shindig (she is now in Greece) for nearly 10 years, and has never ever charged the batteries from the shore. Andrew brings us his knowledge of over 50 years at sea, first in the Merchant Navy, and for many years in yachts. Andrew wrote the highly acclaimed RYA handbook on electrics which is included with the course, and he is now the editor and publisher of Books for Sail.(books-for-sail.com).

Rob Gibson will pass on his huge experience in racing, cruising and sail training so that we can all enjoy sailing at its best. Rob is author of the RYA’s “Sail Trim Handbook for Cruisers”, and whether it’s thrashing across an ocean, or a dash to the pub, good sail trim will get you there quicker, in greater comfort and with more pleasure.
Demonstration of the essentials of rig set up on a yacht alongside in the marina. Sail sets and their use, upwind sailing, trade wind sailing and other topics.
Course includes a copy of the RYA Sail Trim Handbook for Cruisers by Rob Gibson, and tea and coffee. £48.00 members £55.00 non-members. (Limited to 20 delegates)

Practical and Safe Mast Climbing at Sea and in Harbour

Few want to climb their mast, but at some point every skipper needs to. Often the person needed at the top is the one you least want to haul up there, so let them climb. If you can walk upstairs and carry a kit bag, you can learn to climb your mast. On this course, we teach you to go aloft in safety. Solo or assisted, with back up, using your leg muscles and some carefully selected, professional, roped access equipment.
There have been many gadgets and gismos developed, and there have been some highly visible blunders. Here we use tried and tested tools and techniques, in use every day around the world by professionals in the vertical access and communications industry. The course teaches a range of methods, for existing internal halyards or external climbing ropes, and for a person alone with back up, or for two people with the stronger and heavier climbing.
Course includes practical training and tea and coffee. £55.00 members £65.00 non-members.
