Information received from our HLR who is a Harbour Cmmissioner at Lauwersoog, north Holland, 10/4/02.

LAUWERSOOG BORDER CROSSING POINT.
As of January the 1st, the system of entering and leaving Lauwersoog for ships has been changed. Ships with the British flag can not enter Lauwersoog without reporting to the Konklijk Marechaussee ( immigration authority ). This can be done by phone, nr. .. ..(0)58-2123231 or telefax .. .. (0) 58-2123077. When reporting one should have three copies of a crewlist ready, containing the following particulars:
- name ship, flag, homeport,
- first and second name, sex, date of birth and nr. of passport.

When reporting the following instructions from the Immigration officer are possible.
- You can proceed. ( this will happen almost always.)
- You have to more or proceed to the closest yacht-harbour ( ask for the name ) and wait for an officer to visit on board ( waiting time max. 1 hour. (( this will happen very rarely.)) )
- You are not allowed to enter Lauwersoog, but proceed to one of the following ports : Delfzijl, Harlingen or Den Helder.( this will almost never happen and then only when ships are under suspicion of trespassing or smuggling)

When leaving, one should report three hours before departure to the same authorities. Ships entering other ports in the North of the Netherlands, Den Helder, Harlingen or Delfzijl do not have to report, but can proceed without reporting, because this are official boarder crossing points, where immigration officers are available all the time. This measures are a consequence of the "Schengen rules" which means that the Dutch coast is an outer border.

Engure port revisited on the 4th of July 2002. The weather was poor with bad visibility at night, making an approach on the marker light the only option. It turned out that the lights are only visible from the exact line of sight due to the presence of large vessels on both sides of the lightline, blocking all visibility from both sides. A GPS aproach is possible but only when plotted on a WGS84 map with calm sea. If you don't have such map stay away at poor visibility. Take also notice of wooden remains of old structures just above the water in the entrance to the harbour on the port side. Also, at the port side is no light to mark the end of the mole. Brouwershaven - Grevelingmeer - The harbourmaster no longer hails you as you approach to allocate berthing. You have to moor on a small waiting pontoon and climb the sea wall to the office to get your instructions. At the office you will be invited to pay a 20 euro deposit for an electronic key into which will be 'filled' a sum of money to cover showers and electricity - you will really need one key for each member of the crew. This key is then offered up to the shower box in each cubicle and to the electricity box at your berth - the money required and used is electronically deducted. When you leave you have to return to the office at the entrance to the harbour(quite a walk from the inner harbour) and hand in the 'keys' to get your deposit back. The office will then check each key and give you back the unused money. Quite a performance and not seen any where else in Holland during our 5 week cruise. Most harbours either include showers , electricity and water in their charges or require the use of 50 eurocent pieces. Michael Pearce, Yacht: Naivasha, 19/07/02
