Ray Glaister 29/7/03 Mariager Fjord Denmark's most beautiful fjord with wooded slopes up to 70m both sides on inmost section Mariager to Hobro. A must. In addition to items below there is a cement terminal and salt evaporation and shipping plant, both creating shipping. Mariager Fjord, Hadsund, 56N43.0, 10E7.6 (110 and German S34) Fishing harbour seaward side of lifting bridge. We were not charged. Some alongside mooring but be aware of tidal stream. Bridge opens on hour and half-hour. Not very inspiring town but useful overnight harbour on fjord. Toilet but no showers. Electricity. Ray Glaister 1/8/03 Mariager Fjord, Mariager, 56N39.3, 9E58.8 (110 and German S34) Alongside berthing convenient for Salt Museum and supermarkets. Salt Museum is most interesting and admission charge (Kr65, senios Kr55) includes film (in English 1300 and 1600) and bath in hot brine pool (costumes can be hired). Open 10-18 all days in season. Super Brugsen 0830-19, 8-15, 9-16. Library with Internet closes 1500. Excellent Club House with cooking facilities. Pay phone. Swimming bridge to deep fresh brown (peat stream) water. Library with Internet. Three supermarkets, Fotex best, Netto cheapest. Viking Museum. Viking Centre at Fyrkat about 3km with Viking Fort (and water wheel flour mill) a further 1km. Combined ticket for all three also gives 50% discount to Yacht Museum (interesting) and Gas Museum (very thorough treatment of Town and North Sea gas). Brick church 1852 on site of C12th wooden church, cool blue interior open 1500. Web site. Ray Glaister 1/8/03 Udbyhøj Nord Fishing Harbour, 56N36.7, 10E18.4, (122 and German S34) Fishing harbour at entrance to Randers Fjord with alongside berthing. 65Kr any length. Diesel Kr7/litre, contact Hr. Mr.. Shower polet Kr10. DK minimarket about 750m. No beach. Note that the Sud harbour is microscopic, narrow boxes and very limited alongside at end, Kr70. Car ferry between harbours. Earthworks at S harbour were under Englandskrigene 1801-14. We were told the Mariager fjord is by far the prettiest and most interesting of the two fjords. Modern marina surrounded by 7 wind turbines, a large display giving the total power generated, e.g. 925kW at 6.3m/s wind speed. Fresh fish shop. Ray Glaister August'03 Hals, 56N59.4, 10E18.5 (122 and German S33) 3-4m. Entrance to Lim Fjord. Ancient ramparts with moat. Diesel from garage at 100m that has "bunker" you can borrow to take diesel to your boat (cheaper than available in marinas). Town about 3km by cycle path alongside river Grenaen, free loan green bikes (all but one out when we were there), or bus. Mix of modern and half-timbered houses. Church open 14-17. Ray Glaister August'03 Ebeltoft Traffikhavn, 56N11.8, 109E40 (112 and German S30) Frigate Jylland, world's longest wooden ship, in dry dock off marina harbour, conspic. Well worth visiting. Harbour in old town with half-timbered shops. The new town with modern Radhus and library is 2km South of the old town. Ray Glaister August'03 Århus (56N9.9, 10E13.2), (112, also 127 1:10,000) Denmark's second-largest city (pop. 250,000) with Denmark's largest cathedral. North facing harbour sandwiched between city and commercial harbour with view of cathedral tower to South. High speed ferries (Hurtigfaegrund) have a marked route on chart into Århus but even so wash extends for some half mile so give wide berth. Alongside mooring along east side and on hammerheads. <3m Bredde (beam) Kr80, 3-3.5m Kr100, >3.5m Kr150 including electricity. Showers Kr5. Railway station (English papers!). The reconstruction of 75 old houses dating from 17th and 18th centuries (Den Gamle By) in the Botanical Gardens is well worth visiting, allow 2/3 hours and have lunch there. Museum of Occupation is interesting and helps explain relationship of Denmark and Germany. Large Bibioltek. Attracive outside restaurants overlook the modernised narrow riverfront.Ray Glaister August'03 Norsminde Lystbaadehavn, 56N1.4, 10E15.8 (112) 2.2m. Enter between red buoys to port and wall of stones to tiny marina. Strong stream possible through bridge into inland lake. Ancient Inn was toll house. Any length Kr90, a mistake as it encourages large yachts which cannot really be accomodated. Shower Kr10. Ray Glaister August'03 Hou*, 55N54.6, 10E15.4 (112) (* Hov seems alternative spelling especially on boats) <10m Kr90, 10-12m Kr 110, 12-15m Kr 130, >15m 150. Access code for showers. Pay at Havn Kiosk before 2230. Excellent butcher and baker, also Spar supermarket, opposite marina. Ferry harbour for Samsø and Tunø. Choppy in strong winds. Ray Glaister August'03 Tunø Havn, 55N56.9, 10E27.3 (112) Tiny harbour, 2.5m, gets very crowded at peak times, best to arrive by noon. Blue Flag. <10m Kr95, 10-12m Kr130, >12m Kr12/m inc. electricity (2pin). Idyllic island of only 348ha rich in flora. Length 2NM. Population 60, small school. Entire island a conservation area. Attempts to repopulate not very successful. Store and shops. Church tower topped with light house, extremely rare. Cliffs. Beaches. Woods. Ray Glaister 18/7/03 Samsø, Kolby Kås, 5N47.7, 10E31.7 (112) Marina and ferry terminal. 4m. Plenty of room at peak times. Store (8-18) in Kolby village 2km or kiosk in camp site 1km. <14m Kr110 inc. electricity (3 pin). Shower Kr5 token from machine. Washing m/c. Wind mill open Kr10. Good island for cycling, bikes can be hired here. Ray Glaister 17/7/03 Samsø, Langor Havn, 55N54.61, 10E38.53 (112) Claimed to be the most beautiful anchorage in Denmark by a Danish yachtsman we met. Set in large area of nature reserve with no development allowed. Lovely sandy beaches. Very straightforward approach from N, more complex from S but clear using Chart 112. 3m. Extensive anchorage accomodated 40 plus yachts without trouble; good holding in sand, 2-6m. Two mooring buoys. Extensive alongside mooring and boxes in marina. <14m Kr110, >14m Kr220, but despite this gets very crowded. Shop bakes very good bread. Ray Glaister 21/7/03 Samsø, Marup Havn 55N56.3, 10E33.1 (112) Most Northerly harbour on Samsø, 3NM SSE from Tunø. Buoyed entrance 2.4m. Two tiny basins rather open to S. <14m Kr110, >14m Kr220 incl electricity (6A), but despite this gets very crowded. Striking cliffs to W. Kiosk, restaurant, Internet facility Kr40 per 30min. Ray Glaister 21/7/03 Endelave, 55N45.7, 10E16.3 (112) Tiny harbour which must fill in high season. Alongside mooring on sides (2 or 3 abreast) and bows-on at end. <12m Kr90, >12m Kr180. Causeway to island. Bicycle hire Kr50 per day. Ferry jetty alongside and appears to block entrance when in; wait until dangerous wash subsides before leaving or entering. Steps from NW corner of harbour lead down to sandy bottom to give the best swimming weve had, also free of jellyfish. Good sunbathing beach due S of harbour. Only island with substantial numbers of rabbits, introduced around 1925, also deer. Small grass airstrip. Highly recommended out of season. 7/8/03 Fredericia, 55N33.2, 9E43.8 (151 and 158*) (*Strictly one could manage with the 1:75,000 chart but the extra detail on 158 at 1:25,000 is good to have). Large marina really beyond reasonable walking distance W from town centre. Cycle or hourly Number 3 bus from main road by marina and Railway station. Substantial ramparts and moat; white tower (an abandoned water tower) provides panoramic views over red-roofed buildings to Little Belt. Very small (relatively) church. Not really worth a visit. Hejlsminde, 55N21.6, 9E36.2 (151) (Not covered in Segleren's, too small? Good anchorage) Buoyed channel with right-angle bend to starboard. Tiny harbour unlikely to have free box, limited alongside mooring below bridge. <15m Kr90 including showers and electricity. Beware possible strong stream at right angles to boxes and quickly shoaling water in front of boxes. Best to anchor off and use facilities (athough these have access code changed daily). Spar supermarket with bakery open 07-20 all days. 10/8/03 Aarøsund Havn, 55N15.8, 9E42.6 (151) Large marina built 1988. <14m 95, 14-18m Kr120, >18m Kr220. Guests berth on hammerheads of bridges. Small store. No bank. Fish restaurant closed Mondays. 11/8/03 Aarø, 55N15.6, 9E43.8 (151) Spacious harbour almost all for guests. Boxes and alongside opposite ferry but wash reasonable. <10m Kr105, 10-14m Kr115, 14-18m Kr130, >18m Kr260 including electricity. Showers 1 polet from machine for Kr5. Lovely island with rich cornfields. Limited access to coast but good bathing beach by light house. Simple 1906 church with purple pews and font and purple and black pulpit. 11/8/03 Dyvig Bådelaug, 55N2.5, 9E42.2 (151 and 152) Entered through Stegsvig (most N fjord off Als Fjord) through very well buoyed channel into a large idyllic inland lake, Two modern marinas, Bådelaug to S and Dyvig Bro og Kro to North. Excellent anchorage sheltered from all directions. Charges same in both marinas, >8m Kr75, 8-10m Kr 85, >10m Kr 110 including electricity. Showers Kr5 (cold free). Well known Inn (Kro) open Thu-Sun only. Grill/mini shop, fresh bread and rolls can be ordered <2100. 12/8/03 Augustenborg on Als, 54N56.6, 9E52.2 (151 and 152) Broad and well-buoyed channel at end of Augustenborg Fjord. Exposed to West, berths getting rough in fresh winds. <8m Kr90, 8 - 12m Kr100, >12m Kr120. Electricity Kr5. Showers Kr5. 35 tonne travel lift. Diesel. Bibliotek by school. Spar supermarket. Excellent bakery. Augustenborg castle now used as a hospital, has museum on Austenborg ducal family, and fine chapel with ducal box, and pulpit above altar, and organ above this. Information office in 1770 Skomagerhuset. Bus No 13 from causeway on hour and half hour to Sønderborg. 13/8/03 Sønderborg, 54N, 9E (151 and 152) Bridge opens on hour or as indicated on large display. Alongside mooring on E side N and S of bridge for large yachts. Marina <8m Kr95, 8 - 12m Kr105, >12m Kr125, incl electricity. Castle/museum well worth visiting especially chapel with star vault on slender column and organ with external levers instead of stops. Very good shops. Marine stores (chandlers) at Marina and SW of bridge. Fyn
Connected at Middelfart to Jylland (Jutland) just S of Fredericia by two bridges over winding sound, and at Nyborg to Sjælland (Zealand) by two huge bridges. Harbours listed clockwise around Fyn. Harbours covered in Segleren's Havnelods Book 2 (free from marinas) Middelfart Lystbådehavn (55N29.5,
9E43.5 (151 and 158) (*see note under Fredericia). Two separate basins with North-facing entrances. <10m Kr80, 10-12m Kr100, >12m Kr120 including electricity. Showers Kr5. Good bathing beach out of (possibly strong) stream NE of lighthouse and relatively free from jellyfish. Bakery with milk and Bibliotek up hill above marina. Street market with bands on Saturdays. Diesel from garage about 200m if you have wheels for can. Could explore Middelfart by bicycle from here. Odense, 55N24.5, 10E23.0 (116) Deeply inside fjord, necessitating additional chart, so probably most conveniently visited by bus from Kerteminde or train from Nyborg. Small marina just North of the three dock basins. Odense town centre is a little way from the bus and railway station so bikes useful. Magnificent St. Knud's (killed cathedral with foundations of an ancient church in the crypt. Hans Christian Andersons birthplace and museum has an outdoor performance daily, a potted version of 20 of his fairy tales set on a tiny palace with grass slope for audience. Korshavn, Hindsholm, Fyn, 55N36.2, 10E36.7 (114 and 141) A pool of sheltered sea some 4 cables across, inside a hook of land at the extreme North end of Hindsholm, a peninsula off the NE of Fyn. A rather ancient jetty was crowded with yachts giving us the choice between a mooring buoy (3 of 6 were occupied) close to the shore or a more distant anchorage. Some 30 yachts were at anchor but there was space for hundreds. Not charged for mooring buoy. WCs with cold water. Hotel.Ray Glaister 16/7/03 Kerteminde, 55N27.2, 10E40.0 (141) Huge marina. Very attractive town with strongly tidal river and old shop Hokeren. Conspicuous grain silo.7-10m Kr90, 10-15m Kr100, >15m Kr150. Excellent restaurant at Sejlklub overlooking marina. Bibliotek with Internet. Cycled 5km to Ladby through lovely agricultural land with black and white timbered farm buildings. Viking burial ship at Ladbyskibet (5km) is very like that at Sutton Hoo found a few years later but they have preserved the remains in situ (mostly iron work) in an air-conditioned vault and rebuilt the mound above it. Anchor and chain, the oldest known, remain. Bus to Odense.Ray Glaister 16/7/03 Nyborg, 55N18.6, 190E47.5 (141) Østerhaven, almost empty former fishing hr. with new serviced pontoon. Fine brick church. Large brick castle (closed on Mondays) in attractive grounds. Bibliotek with Internet Ray Glaister 16/7/03 Svendborg, 55N3.7, 10E36.9 (152 and 171 large scale) Choice of large marina or commercial harbour (position as above), partly boxes. Automat on side of harbourmasters office dispenses smart cards for Kr100 note. This opens doors but also starts showers (charging Kr5) or washing machines (charging Kr30), the unused balance being refunded in coin when the card is re-inserted. Free internet in bibliotek. Some English-language papers at Station. Ray Glaister 9/7/03 Faaborg, 55N5.6, 10E14.4 (152) Nice old town but not a patch on Marstal or Ærøskøbing. Commercial harbour half full of boxes recommended rather than marina. A new highly decorative canal just completed to give access to harbour for small boats. The conspicuos beautiful tower is not the church, which has in inconspicuous belfry. Museum. 9-12m Kr105 including electricity. Excellent marina but little else except good bathing facilities. Supermarket daily 07-19, PO 14-16. Internet café. <10m Kr100, 10-15m Kr120. Station. Chandlery. Look out for daily ferry to Kiel. Ray Glaister 8/7/03 Rudkøbing, Langeland, 54N56.3, 10E42.3 Lovely sleepy town with no modernization, and old shops. Ørsted, who discovered electromagnetism, born in Apotek here and has statue near Town Hall. Large residential marina and commercial harbour (preferred, boxes and alongside), with surroundings under development. <10m Kr90, <13m Kr110, inc electricity. Ray Glaister 11/7/03 Marstal, Aerø, 54N51.0, 10E31.5 (152) 2.5m. Really delightful old town with 1738 church with copper-clad cupola on tower; many large sailing craft models suspended, medieval font. 800 berth marina may be crowded; 300 visitors today! Very popular with tall ships who berth free as tourist attraction. Internet cafe (Kr10 for 15mins). <10m Kr95 inc electricity. Showers Kr5. Diesel. Pizzeria. Attractive restaurants. Supermarket 9-19(16), closed Sun. Famous maritime museum, 9-20 all days. Ray Glaister 8/7/03 Ærøskøbing, Ærø, 54N53.5, 10E24.8 (142) There are 2 harbours, the marina (crowded) and haven (plenty of room, position as above). Another really delightful town which has won an EU award. Cobbled streets with hollyhocks growing outside houses opening straight onto streets. Charge Kr80<10m, excellent value. Showers Kr5. Rather austere 1746? church with granite font and splendid pulpit from the earlier church. Netto supermarket 9-19 (7-17), closed Sun. Internet access Kr15 for 25mins in Information office. Highly recommended. Ray Glaister 9/7/03 Lyø 55N3.1, 10E9.4 (152) Tiny harbour on delightful-looking island SE of Faaborg. Gets full early in day in peak season although anchoring off a possibility. Exceptionally small space between the to lines of mooring posts makes turning tricky. Ferry. Not really recommended. Helsingør Nordhavnen, 56N2.66, 12E37.06 (Danish 134, Swedish 922) Large marina 2.5-3m with some alongside berths near entrance for visitors, otherwise find box displaying green card, priced on beam, 2.51-3.5m Kr95, 3.51-4m Kr115 including electricity (3pin). Shower token, 5Kr from machine by harbourmaster's office. Diesel Kr6.89/l or 65.6p. Overlooking hr excellent chandlery with all Danish charts (Kr133), 09-1730, 06-16 Sat/Sun and Proviant 7-21 daily Jun/July, 7-20 Aug. Magnificent castle from 1737, open 1000-1700. Elsinore Cathedral (St. Olai) from 1200. Very attractive old town with pedestrianised streets and many small shops e.g. Lynhjems Efte cheese shop with 300 varieties. Big supermarket. Excellent library with free Internet access. Ray Glaister 23/6/03 Køge Nordhamn Marina, 55N28.2, 12E11.8 (132) (Pronounced Koo) Large well-sheltered harbour, only 2-3m, green plates show free berths. Maximum beam clearly shown, few >3.25m. Køge 3 miles by rather busy road past huge chipboard plant: attractive old buildings incl. Museum (10-15) dated 1619. Small basin with boxes gets very crowded, recommend the open basin with alongside mooring to NW, or go on to Fakse Ladeplads! Live music Fri. Small store overlooks hr. Other shops in town. Convenient diesel, cheapest in area. Tiny harbour with 6m wide entrance. Kelp on bottom on approach makes echosounder give alarmingly low depth!
