Darsser Ort Harbour
I have just heard the little harbour of Darsser Ort is now officially closed and will not be dredged again. The approaches are completely silted up. Depths are already down to just a few cms in places. It is very sad to lose this picturesque little hideaway, and it leaves quite a gap between Warnermünde and the next port East which is Barhöft (about 50 nm). Kaliningrad

There are three harbours which can be visited. Namely: Kaliningrad, Pionersk and Baltijsk. Foreign visitors still need a special permission from FSB(equivalent to KGB) to visit port of Baltijsk. Both Kaliningrad and Pionersk are open for visitors, but a written notice of arrival should be submitted to the Customs Post of Kaliningrad at least 72 hrs prior to the boat`s arrival by the hosting YC or an agent. The notice should include: -ETA -ETD -LOA, Beam, Draught -Flag -Home Port -Itinerary -Sail Number(if any) -Reg.No.

The yacht harbour of the Port of Baltijsk is within the Naval Base Area. The facilities are rather modest: water, but no electricity. Berthing is free. Kaliningrad and Pionersk are more progressive - they have both water and electricity available. Their berthing fees are 3usd per yacht per day. I have some contacts in Kaliningrad that still need to be interviewed before I can recommend them to visitors. I am meeting them in October when they come to St.Petersburg. Meanwhile visitors are welcome to contact me for concrete details regarding their planned visits to Kaliningrad region.

Baltic States

The latest edition of Harbours of the Baltic States is now available.   This is updated to 2005 with information on 41 harbours suitable for the average cruising yacht.

Latvia.

The Cattells visited Latvia in 2003 and again in 2004.   The following report is still relevant but greater detail is given in Harbours of the Baltic States.

TIME Latvia has adopted Eastern European time i.e. UT +2 in winter, UT +3 in summer.

CHARTS A new publication "Set of Charts for Latvia for Yachts" publ. 2002 is now available. A copy is in the CA Library.

LIEPAJA. Further improvements include an office for the yacht agent on the quayside where tourist information is available, refurbished toilets and showers plus a washing machine (no drier) in the facilities building.

VENTSPILS. Toilets and showers have been refurbished and washing machines added. The yacht club claims to provide fresh drinking water but this is questionable as at the time of our visit the water was brown in colour. The water main for the whole of Ventspils is being replaced and when this work is completed it is hoped the situation will improve. It must be emphasised however that Ventspils is the only place in the Baltic States where the water quality has been found questionable.

ROJA. Toilets and showers available in a Portakabin.

MERSRAGS. The yacht pontoon is now laid out on the south (port) side of the harbour. Toilets and showers are available in a Portakabin from where water and electricity can also be obtained. The harbour owner is planning a new development with repair and winter storage facilities. Charges have increased and are considered excessive for the location.

ENGURE. The yacht club building has become very dilapidated and is greatly in need of repair. Toilets and showers were locked during the time of our visit.

JURMALA. The entrance has now silted leaving a maximum depth of 1.2m on the bar and the harbour is now officially closed. In consequence, Latvian sheet chart No. 2104 'Mouth of Lielupe and Bullupe' has been withdrawn. We cannot foresee any change to this situation in the immediate future. Unmasted craft can gain access to the Lielupe river via the Bullupe river from the Daugava river.

ANDREJOSTA (Riga). New pontoons have been installed, most using stern buoys but with some space for larger yachts to lie alongside. Water and electricity are provided on the pontoons.

Estonia.

The Cattells visited Estonia in 2003 and again in 2004.   The following report is still relevant but greater detail is given in Harbours of the Baltic States.

TIME Estonia has decided to adopt Eastern European time i.e. UT +2 in winter, UT +3 in summer.

CHARTS The third volume of Charts of Estonia (book form for small craft) - From Saaremaa to Ruhnu 2002 is now available. This completes the charts of Estonian waters. Copies of all three volumes are available in the CA Library. Vol. 1 Gulf of Finland - Narva Joesuu to Osmussaar 1999 Vol. 2 Vainameri (West-Estonian Archipelago) - Osmussaar to Saaremaa 2001 Vol. 3 From Saaremaa to Ruhnu 2002.

RUHNU Dredging was completed this summer and the depth in the harbour is now 3m. There is room for a few yachts to lie beside the quay. Toilets, showers, sauna in harbour building. Interesting remote island well worth visiting. Fay and Graham Cattell. 30/10/03

PARNU The visitors pontoon at the sailing club soon fills up in the height of season but it is possible to find space among the club boats on the other three pontoons - check with office if the owner is expected back during your planned stay. The chandlers has now closed but charts can be obtained through the club - speak to CA HLR Peeter Volkov Fay and Graham Cattell. 30/10/03

KIHNU The harbour has become too shallow beside the concrete edging built a few years back and yachts are now directed to lie alongside a very rough and broken down quay at the head of the harbour. Visitors are warned to be careful of the wind direction as a yacht could easily be damaged by being blown against this quay. The harbour is open to north and east.

Fay and Graham Cattell. 30/10/03

ROOMASSAARE/KURESSAARE/NASVA (Saaremaa) Roomassaare and Kuressaare both have all modern facilities.   Kuressaare is located nearest the facilities of the small town but Roomassaare is conveniently located for the island's airport - daily planes to Tallinn etc.   Some dredging has taken place in the entrance channel leading to Nasva but entry should be made in daylight only.   Local advice is to follow the channel buoys even if by so doing the leading marks do not line up.

HAAPSALU In 2004 most of the facilities were purchased by Grand Holm Marina who have since carried out much refurbishment to the harbour including the laying of substantially heavier sinkers for the stern buoys making them less likely to drag.   Although shallow, the harbour has no shelter from NE to E and in strong winds from these directions can become uncomfortable.    A new facilities building has been created out of former fish processing premises.

The harbour at SORU on Hiiumaa (used by ferries from Triigi on Saaremaa) has been reconstructed and good shelter is provided in the inner pool. Also on Hiiumaa, the harbour at ORJAKU has been improved with more pontoon space and stern buoys; SUURSADAM, which is a centre for fishing boat repairs, welcomes yachts and has a small area of quay available. The harbour on the island of NAISSAAR, although apparently no longer maintained, has plenty of space for visiting yachts, lying alongside the quay (protected by commercial black fenders). The island has few inhabitants but is interesting for its military remains (the island was the store for mines during soviet times). The facilities at PIRITA (Tallinn) have been extended with the addition of a new pontoon with finger berths. Kalev yacht club also has a visitor's pontoon.  Fay and Graham Cattell 30/10/03 with revisions to Spring 2005.

Parnu. Bows on with buoys. Water. Shower. Diesel. all facilities. Police and customs. Hans P.Brædder, 9/10/98

Koiguste. Bows on with buoys. shower, washing machine. Bar. Hans P.Brædder, 9/10/98

Lohusalu. Bows on with buoys.Water.Shower.Diesel. new harbour with all facilities. Hans P.Brædder, 9/10/98

LITHUANIA

Greater detail on cruising in Lithuania and its harbours is given in Harbours of the Baltic States.

TIME Lithuania has adopted Eastern European time i.e. UT +2 in winter, UT +3 in summer.

CHARTS Klaipeda is covered by a new Latvian publication "Set of Charts for Latvia for Yachts" publ. 2002. A copy is in the CA Library. A chart entitled Curonian Lagoon and the Nemunas Delta was published by the Lithuanian Inland Waterways Authority in 2004.   A copy is in the CA Library.

KLAIPEDA. Although Lithuania is a member of the EU, it is still necessary for all visiting yachts to report to Immigration Control on arrival and departure.  Procedures are now carried out in sheltered conditions at Pier 41 - large notices clearly indicate the route to follow.    Visiting yachts may berth either at Klaipėda Sailing Centre or Old Castle Harbour. Graham and Fay Cattell - March 2005

Åland

Mariehamn. Excellent marinas with first-class shower and sauna facilities on both West and East sides of town. West side close to four-master Pommern built in Glasgow and adjacent museum. Laundry must be booked. Electricity. Diesel. East harbour close to excellent bathing beach with changing room and shower set in wild life park. Hans P.Brædder, 9/10/98 Ray Glaister 2/7/99

The Director of the Club, Igor is very helpful. Open air and covered markets nearby with excellent restaurant in round tower, good shopping town. Email Vladimir Ivankiv HLR St. Petersburg for latest position before planning visit. Ray Glaister 8/9/01

A compulsory pilot is no longer needed to visit Viborg.
Vladimir Ivankiv, HLR St Petersburg, 2/10/02

The Bjorkesound Strait (between Ostrov (island) Zapadnyy and Primorsk on the mainland, and on direct route from Viborg to St. Petersburg) is getting more navigable year after year. Still lot of paperwork is to be done beforehand. Late in May a group of 15 Finnish yachts sailed through the Strait and then further to Vysotsk. It is not yet allowed to stop at the area though. The second group from Finland is expected to sail the same route late in June. Officially an agent has to inform the Coast Guard Office about the intended passage through the Strait at least a month and a half in advance. Vladimir Ivankiv, 13/6/01

St.Petersburg. This has three YCs all with some advantage:

Central River YC (59º 57.9'N 30º 14.4'E) Contact: Vladimir Ivankiv.
St. Petersburg Rechnoi Yacht Club,
Petrovskaya Kosa 7 197042
YC Telephone: 235-0447 YC Simple access. Recommended for large and/or deep draught craft. Mooring is bows-on to pontoons or outer mole (which provides best shelter) from stern buoys. Large craft can lie alongside T-ends of pontoons. 24-hour security overlooks the basin . Security guards on main gate. Vladimir Ivankiv can arrange to supply drinking water (not cheap). This club has the most foreign visitors. Water taps are adjacent to the pontoons. Electricity (220V, 2-pin continental). New showers 2000. Restaurant was refurbished and re-opened in 1999. Kiosk with B-B-Q. Plenty of space. Crane (12.5 tonne) can be used for lowering masts. Excellent repair facilities. Easy access to town with a frequent service and single trolleybus ride Number 7, which terminates 500m away, goes direct to Nevsky Prospect. New Metro station a few hundred metres. Charge in 2000 was $1 per metre per night. An excellent shower and sauna is available in a GRP workshop at $2 per person, and other equally charged facilities may be available in a small cruise ship moored alongside. Telephone calls to UK: $2 per minute. St. Petersburg Sea YC (Was Baltic Shipping Co. YC.)

Trickiest access due to narrow fairway and minimal buoyage; by prior arrangement and/or VHF contact, the Club will send out a launch to guide you through the shallow approach. With strong East winds the maximum depth is only 3 metres, but the deep water difficult to find. Mooring is bows-on to a pontoon from buoys. Some are about 30m from the pontoon, so need long warps. Rather crowded. Water taps are adjacent to pontoons. Electricity (220V, 2-pin continental). Smart new sauna and shower in club building. Friendly restaurant and bar refurbished in 1999. Chandlery. Crane. Perimeter fence with 24 hour guard and dogs. There are always other yachtsmen around who will keep an eye on your boat, so one feels secure and welcome here. Several shops including baker, chemist, etc. at 1 km. Attractive surroundings between river, Olympic rowing lake and park. Winter storage facilities. Alexander Maximadji has an office with secretary opposite the club building, and is most helpful. He can also arrange telephone calls. The charge in 2000 was $1 per metre per night. Although the most remote of the three clubs, a new Metro station is 700 metres walk, and involves one change for Nevsky Prospect.

Navy YC (59º 56.0'N 30º 14.1'E)
Marine and Physical Training Centre No. 146 (formerly Navy No.55 YC ).
Manager: Alexey Timofejev Telephone/fax: 355-83 01 and 355-83 02
Deep water access. Small but plans for major redevelopoment for 2003. All visitors, especially ex-RN members, are made very welcome. Mooring is generally stern-on to pontoons from buoys but visitors are given alongside berth in view of 24-hour security. Water taps are adjacent to the pontoons. Electricity. No showers but toilets in office block (men ground floor, women first floor) had been refurbished in 1999 to a just adequate standard. Crane suitable for lowering masts. Good local shops 5 minutes. Markets at Primorskaya Metro and Bolshoi Prospect. International card phone corner of Halichny Ulitsa and Shkipersky Pereulok nearby. No. 10 trolleybus from nearby Shkiperskij goes full length of Nevsky Prospect and make this the marina with best communications; when alighting in Skiperskij look out for large blue shed and submarine on left hand side.
