CA Burgee   The Cruising Association Ethic

Fundamental ethic

It is the fundamental ethic of the Cruising Association that Members donate their time and expertise for the benefit of the Association and its Membership generally and it is recognised that the comprehensive range of services and benefits offered to Members is made possible only by this means.

Code of Conduct

The Cruising Association encourages Members who cruise to do so in well-founded and well-ordered vessels in accordance with the highest standards of seamanship. To this end the Cruising Association and its Members publish and otherwise make available information about navigation, pilotage and seamanship practice.

It is because of this common interest that the Burgee and Ensign of the Cruising Association have become well-known throughout the yachting world and it is accepted that Members will conduct themselves and their vessels so as to enhance their own and the Cruising Association's reputation.

In particular, Members should
  • Ensure, so far as is possible, that their experience and knowledge are sufficient to deal with the conditions and situations which are likely to be encountered in the area being sailed and that they are ready to deal with the unexpected.
  • Develop the highest standards of seamanship, and observe the ordinary practice of seamen, which phrase includes navigation and pilotage, ship handling, safety and consideration for others.
  • Be ready and willing to render such help as they can to secure the safety of other seafarers. Respect the peace, privacy and property of other seafarers and encourage them to show the same respect, so that the enjoyment of all is enhanced.
  • Ensure that their own vessels are well-founded and maintained and fitted with the safety equipment that is appropriate, having regard to the type of ship and the area in which she will operate.

To make this code more helpful in practice, a checklist has been prepared which can be applied to any cruise that you are going to make.
